Scholarships

Mary Wheeler Davis Scholarship

To honor the memory of Mary Wheeler Davis, an annual award is funded by the Mary Wheeler Davis Memorial Fund for the Promotion of the Arts, which was established in 1989. Davis was a native of Charleston and the wife of Dr. William McAlhany Davis. She was an enthusiastic community leader who was involved in many Spartanburg arts organizations.

Applications for the Mary Wheeler Davis Scholarship are now being accepted by The Arts Partnership of Greater Spartanburg at Chapman Cultural Center. One or more $1,000 scholarships are awarded annually to Spartanburg students pursuing college degrees in the visual or performing arts. The selection is based on student character, financial need, and artistic potential. The scholarships are awarded based on the recommendations of a panel of community leaders with interest and expertise in the visual and performing arts.

In addition to completing the application, the student must submit a resume; letters of recommendation; statements pertaining to career goals, scholarship use, and need; and support materials, such as writing samples, tapes, films, and videos.

Peggy Gignilliat Scholarship in Strings

Chapman Cultural Center awards a scholarship in stringed instruments (violin, viola, cello or double bass) to a Spartanburg County student each year. The Peggy Gignilliat Scholarship in Strings award consists of one academic year of private lessons at Converse College’s Lawson Academy of the Arts, up to a limit of $1000. The recipient must be in 7th through 12th grade in the year of study. This scholarship is supported by the Peggy Gignilliat Society giving level of United Arts Campaign. The recipient is expected to perform for the Society at a spring event.

The scholarship is awarded on the basis of musical talent, and the recipient is selected by audition. Auditions are held in conjunction with the regular scholarship auditions of The Lawson Academy of the Arts at Converse College. The winner will receive his or her lessons for the coming school year through the Lawson Academy. If the recipient’s current teacher is not a Lawson Academy faculty member, he or she may affiliate with the Lawson Academy for the year of the scholarship lessons. Auditions are held in March or April each year. Completed applications are due in the Lawson Academy office one month before the audition date. Exact dates will be posted on the Lawson Academy link of the Converse College website.
