Querencia is a Spanish concept which describes a place where one feels safe, a place from which one's strength of character is drawn, a place where one feels at home.

These artists articulate through visual expression a safe place where memories and dreams are born, nourished and sheltered.

Vivianne Lee Carey was born in Millville, NJ in 1959. Carl Sandburg wrote, ''Down in southern New Jersey, they make glass. By day and by night, the fires burn on in Millville.'' As a sculptor that forms metal & glass by fire, the poetic lines are an affirmation of the materials she utilizes in her work. Carey received her BFA from Converse College in 1981, and an MFA from Winthrop University in 2016. She currently teaches in the sculpture department at Converse College and has been honored to have received several grants for regional public sculptures.

Frederick Parrish was born in Greenville, SC in 1941 and graduated from Wofford in 1963 with a BA in English. Parrish studied painting under Ireland Regnier at Clemson 1964-65. He retired from Spartan Mills in 1999 then spent 14 years with SPACE. Known for his steatite bowls, he has been a visiting artist at Converse for the past 2 summers. He currently is studio assistant and psychiatrist to Vivianne Carey
