Spartanburg, SC — The South Carolina Theatre Association awarded Spartanburg Little Theatre the prestigious 2019 S.C. Theatre of Distinction Award at its annual Awards Gala, held at Furman University on February 22.

The 2019 S.C. Theatre of Distinction Award is given to a theatre in South Carolina “that has exhibited a history of artistic, professional, or educational excellence, producing seasons of high artistic quality and establishing a strong presence in the state-wide theatre community.”

Spartanburg Little Theatre staged its first production in 1946 and operated at the Camp Croft Playhouse until 2007 when it moved to the Chapman Cultural Center.  Today it stages, alongside the Spartanburg Youth Theatre, 10 full scale productions a season and offers a year-round comprehensive theatre education program for youth.  In 2020-21, Spartanburg Little Theatre will celebrate its 75th anniversary season.

“For 75 years, the Spartanburg Little Theatre has served as a cultural asset to Spartanburg and the Upstate,” stated Will Ragland, President of the South Carolina Theatre Association. “We are delighted to recognize SLT with this well-deserved honor.

Jay Coffman, Executive Artistic Director of the Spartanburg Little Theatre, accepted the honor on behalf of the organization.

“We are immensely humbled by this prestigious recognition,” said Coffman. “I share this award with our amazing staff, artists, and volunteers, but most importantly with the Spartanburg community who has supported and loved their Little Theatre for 75 years."

Spartanburg Little Theatre will announce their 2020-21 75th anniversary season at it’s 8th Annual Gala & Season Reveal, A Night at Studio 54, on March 26.
