Female Duo The Licorice Whips Performs Free Concert this Sunday
SPARTANBURG, SC — Regional musicians provide free concerts for public enjoyment every Sunday at Chapman Cultural Center, 2-4 p.m. These performances are part of the Center’s Sundays Unplugged program, 1-5 p.m., providing an array of casual and cultural entertainment. Musicians change from week to week to showcase the breadth of local talent, and this Sunday, April 12, rockabilly pop group The Licorice Whips will be featured.
Julie Clark Shubert and Melanie McDermott, an unlikely bassist and electric guitarist duo, make up The Licorice Whips, a rockabilly pop band with original songs. Shubert and McDermott describe their lyrics as sometimes deep, sometimes shallow, but always “funny, sarcastic, and tongue-in-cheek.” As a female duo, The Licorice Whips provides “hooky” lyrics and instrumentals that represent a “woman’s perspective.”
Patrons will create visual arts this Sunday in addition to enjoying local music. Spartanburg Art Museum (SAM) hosts monthly workshops to give families the opportunity to create art together. This month’s SAM Family Program, Pinwheels and Hope, takes pinwheel design to new heights, allowing children to create unique pinwheels out of everyday materials. In the spirit of Child Prevention Month – April – SAM is collaborating with Hope Center for Children to raise awareness for and take a stance against child abuse in South Carolina.
To complement the weekly singer-songwriter concert and the hands-on arts workshop, Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg, Spartanburg Art Museum, Spartanburg Regional History Museum, and the Student Galleries will be open with free admission, 1-5 p.m. Spartanburg Science Center will be open for a small fee.
