We've got some fun new additions for 2016!
In addition to the 6 amazing, nationally-known, chalk artists joining us for our third year, we're also shining the spotlight on our local talent with a Chalk-Off on Friday evening from 5-8pm. Come out and see what your local artists have to offer, see who takes home the cash prizes, and watch the professionals work on huge, 3-D pieces that take days to complete. That night we'll provide chalk for family and friends of all ages to draw all over the Chapman Cultural Center, too! And Growler Haus of Spartanburg and Coca-Cola will be serving up cold beer and soft drinks.
Saturday gets a new twist, too, with another new contest for culinary plate presentation. Spartanburg's finest chefs will be showing off their art skills by presenting their most beautiful, or at least their most intriguing, food designs. Cash prizes will be awarded.
Of course, we will also have the Creativity Challenge on Saturday, with more cash prizes, and there will be over 100 local and regional artists, inventors and entrepreneurs demonstrating their biggest and best ideas and creations. Lots of food trucks will be serving up great meals, snacks, drinks, and deserts, and there will be live music, dance performances, and plenty of fun and games for the kiddies.
New participants, exhibits and events are being added each week, so stay up to date on all the latest by checking out our Facebook event page:https://www.facebook.com/events/1046733052074768/
The 1Spark! festival began in 2014, and takes place between the campuses of Chapman Cultural Center and The George (home of the George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics at USC Upstate) — the literal crossroads of creativity and innovation — on the Saturday before Labor Day each fall.
A single spark of inspiration is all it takes to produce a masterpiece of art or an innovative business. Spartanburg is full of these sparks, shining bright with creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, so Chapman Cultural Center created 1Spark! to highlight these brilliant aspects of our community and to foster creative collaboration. It showcases Spartanburg's makers — visual artists, performers, entrepreneurs, inventors, and others — with entertainment and demonstrations.
"Spartanburg is already known throughout the region as a vibrant arts community, and nationwide as a pro-business community. What better way to celebrate two of our most valuable assets than to combine them into a single concept and event?"
-Jennifer Evins, President/ CEO
Local food trucks, regional musicians and dancers, small business owners, and artisans demonstrate their techniques and processes, and everybody engages in creativity challenges. Attendees can vote for their favorite artist or entrepreneur.
1Spark! also is known as a showcase for the best 3D chalk artists in the country. In 2015, the artists were Lee Mobley and Shane K. Mesmer of Eye Candy Grafix, David Lepore, Hector Diaz and Ken Mullen of Chalk Guys, and Mike V Las Casas.
