New Play About 19th Century Composers Developed in Spartanburg HUB-BUB and the Spartanburg Little Theatre Co-Produce Premiere Workshop
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Anna Elliott, the 2015 theatre artist-in-residence with HUB-BUB and The Spartanburg Little Theatre, presents a workshop of her new play Ghost Variations as the culmination of her six-month residency in Spartanburg. The play runs June 12 and 13 at 8 p.m. the Black Box in Chapman Cultural Center.
Although the play focuses on the lives of famed composers and musicians Johannes Brahms, Clara Schumann and Robert Schumann, Anna notes that Ghost Variations is “just as much about contemporary questions of being an artist, being in love with an artist and being a woman who is an artist and a mother.” Directed by USC Upstate graduate Patric Phillips, the cast features a number of local professional artists. “Anna has done an amazing job at paralleling the lives of artists in the 19th century with those in today’s society,” Phillips says. “Ghost Variations provides an opportunity to challenge, provoke and hopefully enlighten…all in a lighthearted style.”
