5 Gifts you'll find at the Holiday Craft Market

Chapman Cultural Center is hosting the 2018 Holiday Craft Market on Saturday, December 15th, 2018 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. The event is free, and will be held in the lobby of the Chapman Cultural Center Theater and is open to the public.

This year the market was judged by a blind jury and 26 were selected by the jury as the best in their categories. Check out the 5 gifts you'll be able to shop for at this year's market!

2D Artwork

This year, artists Rosetta Nesbitt, Ali Stone, and Rita Howard were chosen to participate. In Rita's art, she uses the opaque when necessary to achieve the look she is going for. Getting lost in a landscape; it carries her back to the child within her. Rosetta is a printmaker whose outlook as an artist is strongly influenced by nature, women of her culture, and the historical impact of agriculture in the South on the lives of these women. Ali specializes in watercolor prints that are both colorful and cheerful. She also handcrafts colorful fiber rainbow works out of rope and yarn.

3D Artwork

In 3D gifts, artists Joan Wheatley, Chloe Long, Jason Hart, Margaret Proctor, and Dora Elizondo are all participating this year! Joan makes everything from one-of-a-kind whimsical treehouses, collector cases, small paintings, photography, and miniature ceramic clay mice. Chloe specializes in hand carved-hand painted bird ornaments, St. Nicks, gnomes, tomtes, and forest animals. Craftsman Jason Hart creates wooden bowls, vases, pens, coasters, and even ornaments. Margaret's artistic outlets include fused glass, stained glass, painting, mosaics and garden features. While Dora creates one of a kind functional and decorative wheel-thrown and handcrafted pottery.

To Wear

Our most robust category features artists Rosemary McLeod, Dewi Mayasari, Ashley Gilreath, Melinda Ledford Crow, Louise Fagan, Jae Page, and Vickie Napoli! Rosemary's work features handcrafted artisan jewelry made of sterling, copper, brass, and other prisma-colored work. Dewi creates original designs crafted and assembled by hand. She specializes in handbags made from different textiles including leather. Ashley's work revolves around the history of objects and our relationships with family heirlooms. Each piece is hand fabricated or cast using sterling silver, bronze, or enamel. Melinda sells unique, bohemian jewelry utilizing stone, vintage buttons & found treasures. Designs are original, one of a kind and crafted for individualism! Louise's jewlery is made from old hymn book pages; original watercolor paintings, old books and graphics. Vintage inspired accessories with a contemporary twist. Jae creates one of a kind eclectic urban necklaces for men and women in just about any pattern you could ever imagine! To round out our wear category, Vickie crafts jewelry out of a sterling sheet or wire: The design process includes forging the metal, soldering, setting stones, and polishing to create beautiful, wearable pieces of jewelry.

Personal Care & Prepared

In the personal and prepared space, makers Sandy Scholz, Amy Johnson, Katie White, Debra Varvaro, and Cecelia Miller will be in attendance. Sandy creates handmade body butters, clay masks, body scrubs, lip balms, hair products, body washes, soaps, clay masks, and even beard oils, shaving soaps, and aftershave for men! Amy will supply you with a tasty crunch, she makes Gourmet Toffee Crunch and Southern Cheddar Wafers! Katie's products are Certified SC and also import raw materials (Himalayan salt from a mine I have worked with since 2012) for handcrafted salt lamps! Debra has special treats for your fuzzy family! She specializes in natural dog biscuits made with Honey from her personal hives. Cecelia is bound to have a blend for you, she sells a variety of coffee products (whole beans, by the cup, flavored), herbal tea, herbal extractions, herbal skin salves, and even Nut brittle (peanut, cashew, pecan) and Chocolate Nut Clusters. 

Everything Else!

In our last category, you'll see a little bit of everything from artists and crafters Deborah Ford, Keith Hansen, Andrew Ballew, Carol Mueller, Mary Metcalf, and Ida Clowney. Deborah creates Christmas Wooden Signs/ Decor, Wooden Puzzles/Toys, and Jewelry too. Keith is a true craftsman, specializing in handcrafted pens, ornaments, ice cream scoops, pepper grinders bottle openers, bottle stoppers, rings and other items. Andrew is not to be missed, as part of a father and son woodworking team, he creates handmade wooden gifts including cutting boards, serving boards, charcuterie boards, cake stands, pepper mills, and holiday ornaments. Carol creates specialty wood items that are decorative and functional as well as vintage-style children’s toys. Mary specializes in all things whimsical. She creates handcrafted Indoor Fairy Gardens and Needle Felted Items! Last but certainly not least, Ida has Handmade cloth dolls which include yarn hair, cloth body, and a cotton dress. (everything is original, no patterns)! HEr works have been collected by museums and galleries and even Mister Rogers, whose TV show she stared on in the late 90s!

So this year, stop by to enjoy some holiday music while you shop or grab a bite to eat or some hot chocolate from the mobile café of Café Around the Corner.
