The Spartanburg Repertory Company (SRC) is proud to be a part of Spartanburg’s artistic community.  In October of 1987, Sharon Rouse Fridy founded the Spartanburg Repertory Company as an organization dedicated to providing outstanding opera, operetta, and musical theater performances to the Spartanburg County community, enriching the lives of her citizens, educating both young and old in these fascinating art forms, and giving performing opportunities to Spartanburg’s gifted singers.

The SRC performs an average of three productions per year in addition to a benefit event that offers patrons the opportunity to enjoy performances in a more intimate setting. The Company added a children’s opera, Little Red Riding Hood, to its 2004-2005 season and became known as the first Upstate South Carolina performing arts organization to produce children’s opera. The production proved to be so successful that academic institutions asked the SRC to consider campus performances. Our offsite educational programming has reached nearly 5000 students, faculty and staff in Spartanburg County since inception.

The David Reid Theatre at the Chapman Cultural Center has served as the SRC’s main stage since its dedication in October, 2007. The 2008 South Carolina debut of Scrooge & Gilbert & Sullivan resulted in a cameo performance by its writer, Nathan Hull, who is based in New York. We collaborated with the Converse College Theatre Department to present Kiya Heartwood’s “Lying to the Sea Gypsy” during the 2009-2010 season. This children’s operetta was also a South Carolina debut production.

Unlike other arts organizations in town, the Spartanburg Repertory Company is run entirely by volunteers.  With no paid staff, we rely on volunteers to help with every production, and with every aspect of the Company.  Please contact us to find out how you can help the operatic arts continue to flourish in Spartanburg.  We need and welcome financial sponsors at any level, and invite you to purchase a season membership.
