Spartanburg Soaring!
January through May 2014

What is Spartanburg Soaring!?

Spartanburg Soaring! is a community-wide initiative to build civic pride, enhanced with activities and events that engage cultural curiosity and promote active play using kites and Spartanburg Soaring! as a common theme. All activities and events are designed to promote inspired playfulness across generations while encouraging collaboration and building civic pride. Spartanburg Soaring! events will begin in January and last through May, but the results will be long-lasting on the city's economy and strong sense of community pride.

Chuck Holmes' Kite Exhibit
One of the catalysts for the Spartanburg Soaring! collaboration has been an upcoming kite exhibit at Chapman Cultural Center, beginning in March. Spartanburg resident and kite enthusiast Chuck Holmes will exhibit his extensive kite collection throughout the facilities at Chapman for 60 days to celebrate Spartanburg Soaring! Get an exclusive preview of what's to come in Spartanburg Art Museum, where a special selection of Holmes' kites are on display, starting Thursday, Feb. 20. Click here to read about Chuck Holmes', the kite man himself, on page 38 of Spartanburg Magazine's Spring '14 issue.

Community Kite-Flying Fields
Several local parks will host community kite flying fields on the third and fourth Saturdays in March. Diverse ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds are encouraged to come together to celebrate the soaring spirit of Spartanburg. Event collaborators will hold activities, including kite flying competitions. These partners include Partners for Active Living, the YMCA, City of Spartanburg Parks and Recreation, and Spartanburg Methodist College. The winners will advance to the International Kite Festival on March 29. These are the parks and school playgrounds which will be utilized as the community kite-flying fields:

1. Stewart Park Fields
2. Northwest Center Fields
3. CC Woodson Center Fields
4. Adams Park in Beaumont Mills
5. Woodland Heights Elementary School playground
6. Jesse Bobo Elementary School playground
7. Thomas E. Hannah YMCA soccer fields

Spartanburg Soaring! International Kite Festival
On the last Sunday in March, an International Kite Festival will bring the entire city together at Barnet Park. Winners of the previous community-based competitions will advance to this vibrant and thrilling day of looking toward the skies with others. Live music, face painting, food and drink will be on tap, as well as national kite-flying professionals. The end-of-month Festival will kick off April, National Kite Month.

Spartanburg Soaring! Scavenger Hunt
Enjoy the thrill of a hunt as part of Spartanburg Soaring! when the downtown scavenger hunt goes live on March 29. To promote cross-generational active play, the scavenger hunt will bring friends and family together in search of kites in downtown Spartanburg. Come to Chapman for the booklet of clues and head downtown to find hidden kites, all featuring a poem from the recent Poetry Competition. Fill out the booklet, and bring it back to Chapman; the first 50 participants to complete the hunt will receive 2 FREE tickets to Spartanburg Youth Theatre's production of Treasure Island. Click here to download the booklet, or go to the lobby of the Moseley Building to pick one up.

Spartanburg Soaring! Written Poetry Competition
Poets from age 8 to 108 were invited to engage in the Spartanburg Soaring! poetry competition. Authors from four different age brackets looked to the sky for literary inspiration, answering the question, "What do you think makes Spartanburg soar?" Some winners have their poems displayed in the family fun downtown Scavenger Hunt that began in March. Others were winners of a professional judging process. The winning poems can be found here. Authors will also be able to celebrate the literary arts by reading their poem on Poetry Saturday on April 26. Find full details on the Poetry Competition here. This project is funded in part by The Humanities Council of South Carolina, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Spartanburg Soaring! Poetry Saturday
With the written portion of the poetry competition completed, things are getting vocal. On Saturday, April 26, hear readings and experience poetry workshops by award-winning professionals, 1-4 p.m., and then discover what a poetry slam is like, 6-9 p.m. Those interested in competing should register with Spoken Word Spartanburg by April 12 in either the Beginners ($10) or Experienced ($25) category. Cash prizes will be awarded to the Beginners winner ($200) and the Experienced winner ($1,500). Admission to the poetry slam is $5 per person. This project is funded in part by The Humanities Council of South Carolina, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Spartanburg Soaring! Photography Contest
Take a snapshot of Spartanburg's soaring successes as part of the community-wide initiative, and you could not only be exhibited at Chapman, you could win a cash prize! For just $5, participants may submit 3 photos--mounted on 11"x14" display boards--that reflect the theme and spirit of Spartanburg Soaring! (HINT: The Community Kite Flying Fields and International Kite Festival would be wonderful opportunities to take some pics!) Submit by April 10.
