The wonderous world of science, nature, and technology comes alive at the Spartanburg Science Center. A non-profit organization established in 1978, the Center's  primary goal is to foster an appreciation of and respect for the environment and the world around us. The Science Center fascinates the minds of the curious and excites the imagination of Spartanburg residents of all ages. It is also a place to pursue new interests and experiences.

The Spartanburg Science Center has been an associate of The Arts Partnership from its very beginning, having originated in the old Spartanburg Art Center on Spring Street. When the Chapman Cultural Center was opened in 2007, the Science Center relocated to the second floor of the East Wing Building. In the Fall of 2011, the Center began receiving 14 new exhibits, giving the Center its first major facelift. It is often referred to as Science Center 2.0 All of the exhibits are kid-friendly, hands-on and interactive.

In addition, the Science Center has a vast collection that includes exhibits and resource material on rocks and minerals, fossils, electricity, astronomy, insects, animals, live reptiles and amphibians, and human health. The portable Starlab offers a vivid demonstration of the night sky and the changes it undergoes as time passes. Most of these resources can easily travel to schools or community locations in addition to being on display at the Center. The Center houses many species of exotic and native snakes, turtles, frogs, fish and spiders. These animals are on display for public viewing, and students who participate in our programs and summer camps are given the opportunity to hold and get to know the animals up close and personal.

The Spartanburg Science Center also offers programs in all major fields of science. These are hands-on, student-participatory programs. Programs can be held at the Science Center or on location at your school, and field trips to local natural habitats can also be arranged. Our programs are specifically designed to help local schools meet South Carolina’s state science curriculum standards for grades K through 8. The Science Center is open for General Admission Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours and birthday parties can be scheduled in advance for Tuesday through Saturday.

Executive Director John Green hails from Ohio with a bachelor’s degree from Ohio University in Wildlife and Forestry. Mr. Green has served as the Executive Director of the Spartanburg Science Center since 1979. Over the past three decades, he has educated thousands of youth from Spartanburg and across the Upstate.
