The magical world of science, nature, and technology comes alive at the Spartanburg Science Center, a non-profit organization established in 1978. The primary goal of the Science Center is to foster an appreciation of and respect for the environment and the world of science. With this goal in mind, the Science Center is designed to fascinate the minds of the curious and to excite the imagination of Spartanburg residents of all ages. It is also a place to pursue new interests and experiences.

The Science Center's permanent collection includes exhibits and resource material on rocks and minerals, fossils, electricity, astronomy, insects, live reptiles and amphibians, health resources, animals, and the human body. Our portable Starlab offers a vivid demonstration of the night sky and the changes it undergoes as time passes. Most of these resources can easily travel to schools or community locations in addition to being on display at the Center. The Exhibit section “My Backyard” houses 18 species of exotic and native snakes, turtles, frogs, and spiders. These animals are on display for public viewing, and students who participate in our programs and summer camps are given the opportunity to hold and get to know the animals up close and personal.

The Spartanburg Science Center also offers programs in all major fields of science. These are hands-on, student-participatory programs. Programs can be held at the Science Center or on location at your school, and field trips to local natural habitats can also be arranged. Our programs are specifically designed to help local schools meet South Carolina’s state science curriculum standards for grades K through 8. The Science Center is open for General Admission Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours and birthday parties can be scheduled in advance for Tuesday through Saturday.
