Artists’ Guild OF Spartanburg

The Artists' Guild of Spartanburg, created in 1957, serves as a source for creative art in the community by promoting, fostering, and cultivating knowledge of the visual arts and of local artists. It strives to provide enrichment and artistic education for its members as well as the community at large, and thus encourage a deepening appreciation, understanding, and love of art among the citizens of Spartanburg and surrounding counties.  We have two membership categories, artists and art lovers.

The Artists' Guild of Spartanburg embraces a philosophy of education and competition for its members and a policy of community service through arts education for the public. It endorses no particular style or aesthetic philosophy, but seeks to help its individual members realize their full potential in the mediums and styles of their choice. It has long believed that one of the best ways to help its members develop and nurture their professionalism is by endorsing a philosophy of supportive competition.

The Guild strives to help its members learn to compete more effectively by having an annual juried exhibition, by encouraging members to enter outside juried competitions, by providing programs and workshops that give the kind of technical and creative insights that help artists improve their work, and by serving as both a community that strengthens personal ties and a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences for its members.

Our largest single supporter is The Arts Partnership of Greater Spartanburg, but we also receive grants or gifts from the South Carolina Arts Commission and local foundations, businesses and individuals.  However, we remain a self-governing organization with its own officers and board, who serve as unpaid but enthusiastic stewards of the Artists’ Guild’s functions.   We have a part time executive director, but as a guild, we rely on our members to take an active role as volunteers to enable us to operate efficiently.

Please visit our Guild Gallery at the Chapman Cultural Center where we hold monthly exhibitions for our local artists.  Monday – Saturday, 10:00-5:00 p.m.
